The National Railways of Zimbabwe is seeking investors to partner in the establishment of a US$2.4 million concrete sleeper manufacturing plant as part of its efforts to modernise railway infrastructure and expand regional business opportunities.

The rail operator actively courted investors on Wednesday at the Bulawayo Investment Indaba, where it presented the project as a crucial component of refurbishing and maintaining existing railway tracks while supporting new rail developments.

According to NRZ on their official X account, the proposed plant will have an annual production capacity of 60,000 concrete sleepers, with 60% allocated for NRZ operations and the remaining 40% available for sale to regional markets.

Concrete sleepers are more durable than traditional wooden sleepers, enhancing rail safety and longevity.

NRZ has been struggling with aging infrastructure and is looking to revamp its rail network to improve efficiency and reliability. The new facility is expected to reduce the cost of sleeper imports and provide a steady local supply to meet the growing demand in Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries.

The project is part of NRZ’s modernisation efforts, which include securing funding for rolling stock, upgrading signaling systems, and improving operational efficiency.
