Zimbabwean champions Scottland have earned high praise from Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz, who believes the continental debutants possess the quality to make a significant impact in their upcoming CAF Champions League journey.

Da Cruz’s endorsement followed a closely contested Toyota Cup match this afternoon at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, where Amakhosi managed a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Mabvirarira in front of a packed crowd.

A 16th-minute strike by Mfundo Vilakazi proved to be the decisive goal of the encounter.

Both managers opted to rotate heavily, fielding entirely different lineups in each half, with Scottland unleashing their star players for the second 45 minutes.

"Scottland are a very good side, they were good both technically and physically," the well travelled Da Cruz said.

The French tactician, regarded as one of the continent's rising managerial talents, boasts an impressive résumé that includes a spell with Moroccan powerhouses AS FAR, alongside coaching stints in France and Belgium prior to his arrival in African football.

Looking ahead to the continental competition kick-off in September, Da Cruz predicted that the Zimbabwean champions could turn a few heads.

"Depending on the fixtures, I think this team might have a good trip in the CAF Champions League.

"They are good posessionally," added the French gaffer.

Scottland head coach Norman Mapeza initially opted for a fringe lineup in the opening period, appointing Abubakar Moffat as captain.

Talbert Shumba started in goal behind a defensive line featuring Albert Manenji, Issaka Mohamed, Nixon Nyasulu, and new recruit Al Ameen Tijan. Fresh signings Stoffel Witbeen of Namibia and Brazilian midfielder Anderson De Campos were also handed starting spots.

Mapeza completely transformed his side at the break, introducing high-profile stars Khama Billiat, Knowledge Musona, Kwake Twala, Emmanuel Jalai, Moses Shidolo, and goalkeeper Nelson Chadya.

The second-half reshuffle also saw Kevin Moyo, Peter Muduhwa, Mtokozisi Msebe, Walter Musona, and Panashe Mutimbanyoka take to the pitch.

Reflecting on the pre-season fixture, Mapeza expressed satisfaction with his squad's performance.

"We came here to test ourselves ahead of the CAF Champions League and I am sure we got the test," said Mapeza.

The former Zimbabwean international insisted that the gap between the two sides was minimal.

"Football is almost the same across the world," said Mapeza.

"Kaizer Chiefs got a half chance and they converted, we also got half chances.

"But credit goes to my boys, they worked so hard," added Mapeza.

The visitors posed several threats to the Kaizer Chiefs goal, but Glamour Boys captain Brandon Petersen delivered a solid performance between the uprights to safeguard his side’s 1-0 advantage into the interval.

Chiefs found attacking threat through Luke Baartman on the left flank and Dillan Solomons surging up the right channel.

While Scottland pushed forward effectively, they occasionally lacked sharpness in the final third most notably when Panashe Mutimbanyoka opted to turn his marker rather than cross immediately, giving the Chiefs backline crucial time to recover.

Knowledge Musona nearly leveled the scores in the second stanza with a dipping free-kick, and his seamless link-up play alongside Billiat offered Kaizer Chiefs fans a nostalgic reminder of the duo’s former spells at the Soweto club.

Despite dominating large spells of the second half, Scottland ended up on the losing side, though they achieved the tough workout they set out for.

"Once you play a team outside your country, it's a different ball game altogether.

"It's a good test," said Mapeza.

Scottland participated as the invited side in the Toyota Cup, an annual pre-season showpiece now in its third edition.

Chiefs had suffered defeats in both previous iterations of the tournament, falling to Ghanaian outfit Asante Kotoko last year and Tanzania’s Young Africans the year prior.

The victory over Scottland comes on the heels of Chiefs' recent pre-season tour in Spain, where they suffered a 1-2 loss to La Liga side Elche in an international club friendly.
