A Chitungwiza man believed to be part of a gang that carried out a violent home robbery and got away with over US$5,800 in cash and valuables has appeared in court.
Willard Zvinorukwa, 48, was remanded in custody when he appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts on armed robbery charges.
The state alleges that on the night of November 21, 2024, Zvinorukwa and accomplices—already on remand—stormed a family home at around 9 PM just as the victims returned from their shop, counting money from the day’s business.
The four complainants were named as Stancilous Chihumbiri, 77; Gladys Chihumbiri, 63; Christopher Chihumbiri, 43; and Melissa Sakutukwa, 24.
According to court proceedings, the maid raised the alarm, shouting that intruders had entered the house. Two of the robbers reportedly forced their way into the lounge wielding machetes and struck Stancilous on the shoulder while demanding cash. They allegedly made off with his Samsung Galaxy A24.
The robbers then proceeded to the bedroom, where they brandished a small, unidentified pistol and demanded money from Gladys. They reportedly stole US$1,302 from Melissa along with her Samsung Galaxy M33 and a Galaxy A05.
The accused also allegedly took keys to a safe, from which they stole US$3,000 and a Star pistol, serial number 53646, registered to Christopher. More items stolen included a Samsung Galaxy A04, a Galaxy S22, two handbags, and US$90 in cash from Gladys.
A police report was made, and the investigation led to Zvinorukwa's arrest on March 6 this year for a separate robbery that occurred on March 3 at Meru Service Station in Kuwadzana.
During questioning, Zvinorukwa allegedly made voluntary indications, leading detectives to the location where Christopher’s stolen Star pistol had been dumped and later recovered.
The total value of stolen property and cash is pegged at US$5,827.
