The United States is preparing to offer Saudi Arabia a massive arms package worth over US$100 billion, according to six sources familiar with the matter. The proposal is expected to be announced during US President Donald Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia in May.
This comes after the Biden administration's failed attempt to finalize a defense pact with Riyadh, which included Saudi Arabia normalizing ties with Israel.
The Biden administration's proposal had offered access to advanced US weaponry in exchange for halting Chinese arms purchases and limiting Beijing's investments in the kingdom, though it’s unclear if similar conditions will apply to the Trump administration’s new offer.
Lockheed Martin, RTX (formerly Raytheon Technologies), Boeing, Northrop Grumman Corp, and General Atomics are expected to play significant roles in the proposed package, which could include C-130 transport aircraft, missiles, radars, and drones. While some of these deals have been in the works for years, including a US$20 billion deal for General Atomics’ MQ-9B drones, others are more recent developments.
Executives from defense companies may also travel to the region as part of the delegation, according to several sources.
