The European Union has opened its market to all Zimbabwean products duty-free, creating major opportunities for local companies to expand their exports.
EU Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Jobst Von Kirchmann, made the announcement last week at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.
“This is a major opportunity for Zimbabwean companies. The EU market is now fully open, and all products from Zimbabwe can enter duty-free,” Von Kirchmann said.
He noted that the move comes as global trade tensions continue to rise, making it even more important for Zimbabwean businesses to diversify and tap into new markets.
Horticulture is among the sectors expected to benefit the most, with the EU already accounting for more than 40% of Zimbabwe’s horticultural exports.
The EU remains Zimbabwe’s fourth-largest trading partner, with annual trade volumes exceeding €700 million. European investment into Zimbabwe has also grown significantly, with foreign direct investment from the EU having tripled in recent years.
Von Kirchmann emphasized that the EU’s commitment goes beyond trade, announcing a €500 million investment into sustainable agriculture, women’s empowerment, and green energy projects.
“We are not only opening markets. We are also investing in Zimbabwe’s future through projects that support agriculture, women, and green energy,” he said.
To further support local businesses, the EU has launched a €60 million loan facility through the European Investment Bank aimed at helping Zimbabwean companies grow and access the European market.
Von Kirchmann urged businesses to be proactive in taking advantage of the opportunity by ensuring they meet EU market standards.
The EU-Zimbabwe Business Forum, focusing on agriculture, renewable energy, and mining beneficiation, will be held in Harare from May 20 to 22.
