At just 20 years old, Olivia Tanyaradzwa Mugota is already making her mark in Zimbabwe’s baking scene. Through her growing brand, Frosting Fairytales, she whips up everything from layered wedding cakes to pancakes, cookies, muffins, and queen cakes—each treat a chapter in her sweet success story.
Mugota’s passion for baking began at the tender age of six, nurtured by her father, a professional baker.
“My dad taught me everything I know,” she said. “I used to watch him bake and try to help whenever I could. That’s where it all started.”
For the past three years, Mugota has been baking professionally, catering for weddings, anniversaries, and birthdays. One of her most memorable challenges was creating a 15-tier fruit cake for a wedding—an ambitious project she completed with her father’s support.
“It was the biggest cake I’ve ever done. It wasn’t easy, but with my dad helping me, we pulled it off,” she said with pride.
Of all her baked goods, fruit cake holds a special place in her heart. “It reminds me of my late grandfather—he loved fruit cake,” she shared. “Every time I bake one, I feel close to him.”
Her first solo attempt at baking wasn’t without its hiccups. “I was supposed to bake a vanilla sponge cake,” she laughed. “But I forgot the vanilla essence. It turned out to be just a plain sponge cake.”
Despite the early slip-ups, Mugota kept going—and built a brand that’s now attracting collaborations. Frosting Fairytales has teamed up with companies like Get it Real with Daisy and Gift Galore to deliver cakes and surprise gift packages.
“These partnerships have really helped me reach more people,” she said. “Especially those looking to surprise their loved ones with something sweet.”
Mugota encourages aspiring young bakers to start where they are.
“If you know someone who bakes, learn from them. If not, try to find a baking school or mentor,” she said. “Start small and keep practicing.”
Looking ahead, her dream is to open her own walk-in bakery—a space where people can experience the “magic of Frosting Fairytales” in person.
“I want customers to walk in, place their orders, and leave with a smile,” she said.
As she continues to grow her brand, Mugota hopes to spread joy and inspiration—one cake at a time.
