Zimbabwe Rugby Union president Losson Mtongwiza has been suspended following the emergence of a leaked audio in which he harshly addressed the women’s national team, the Lady Sables.
The National Executive Board announced Mtongwiza’s two-week suspension after an Extraordinary General Meeting held on May 6, 2025, and consultations with the Sports and Recreation Commission.
Zimbabwe Women’s Rugby Chairperson Regina Mwanandiwa was also suspended pending further inquiry.
In the leaked audio, Mtongwiza was heard saying, “If you are here to be paid, don’t come again! We’re not here to pay people. If we don’t have money, we don’t owe you anything,” amid complaints players had not received payments for recent matches.
ZRU said the suspensions are part of efforts to uphold transparency, governance, and accountability, stressing the process is in line with its constitution. The union has appointed Dr. Tapfuma Parirenyatwa as acting NEB chairman, while Thembelani Ncube remains vice president. The women’s board will appoint its acting head soon.
Investigations into financial mismanagement and mistreatment claims are ongoing.
