The long-awaited Trabablas Interchange—formerly known as the Mbudzi roundabout—is now in its final stage and set to open to traffic this May, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has confirmed.
The massive road project, which began in January 2022 with a budget of US$88 million, is now fully complete in terms of bridge structures, with all 15 bridges constructed.
Initially scheduled for completion in January 2025, the project has been fast-tracked and will now open to the public earlier than expected.
“The Trabablas Interchange Construction Project is almost complete. We’ll be opening it to traffic this May 2025,” said the Ministry.
The new interchange replaces the once-chaotic Mbudzi roundabout and includes a modern flyover, expanded traffic lanes, and safer pedestrian walkways. It was designed to ease congestion at one of the busiest intersections in the country, connecting Harare to Masvingo and Beatrice.
A site engineer involved in the project said, “We have completed all the bridges, and current works include final touches like road markings, signal installations, and safety inspections.”
The project has created over 600 jobs and is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, reduce accidents, and boost the local economy by enabling smoother transport of goods and services. Local businesses surrounding the interchange have welcomed the development, anticipating increased access and convenience.
The government noted that the Trabablas Interchange is part of a broader infrastructure programme, which includes other roads still under construction such as the Harare-Domboshava Road, Lorraine Drive, and the Birchenough-Murambinda Road—all scheduled for completion in 2025.
