A man from Manyaya Village in Chipinge has been slapped with a 10-year prison sentence after admitting to vandalising a transformer owned by the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company.
Peter Matengahama, 46, appeared in court recently where he pleaded guilty to stripping and stealing parts from the transformer, an offence he committed in May 2022 along with his co-accused — Misheck Masunungure and Witness Mwakupuka — who have already been convicted.
The court heard that the trio used tools to unbolt the transformer from its structure, toppled it, and extracted valuable copper windings. The act resulted in damage valued at around US$7,000.
Matengahama managed to evade capture for three years, but police finally arrested him on May 30, 2025, at his homestead after receiving a tip-off.
The National Prosecuting Authority said the transformer vandalism severely disrupted electricity supply to schools, farms, and homes in the area, derailing livelihoods and stalling development in the region.
