Three armed suspects pulled off a bold daylight robbery at Old Nic Mine in Killarney on Wednesday, escaping with more than US$500 000 in cash.
The robbery happened just before 1 PM when the suspects reportedly approached a security guard who was on duty, threatened him with a firearm, and took his weapon. They then allegedly assaulted the guard and restrained him using cable ties before hiding him beneath a white Honda Fit parked near the scene.
According to eyewitness accounts from mine workers, two of the robbers used a metal cutter to break through the perimeter fence surrounding the mine offices. Once inside, the trio demanded keys to the main safe from two staff members present.
After forcing one of the employees to open the safe, one of the robbers stuffed US$523,076 in cash into a blue sling bag. They also took a staff member’s mobile phone before fleeing the scene on foot.
The total value of stolen assets has been pegged at US$543,076. As of now, no arrests have been made, and none of the stolen items have been recovered.
The alarm was raised shortly after the suspects made their getaway, with a police report quickly filed. Officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s CID Homicide Unit, Canine Unit, and other divisions responded to the scene and have since launched investigations.
