12 years imprisonment for US$70 armed robbery spree

A Rusape magistrate has sentenced an armed robber to a 12 years in prison for having brandished a stolen rifle at four different people before robbing them of a total of US$70.

Two years were set aside on condition of good behaviour by the magistrate, Mr Francis Mapfumo.

Simbarashe Mutenga (23) was employed as a security guard and he stole a 303 rifle from his employer, Cliff Security.

He pointed it at the four victims at their respective premises at Murambinda Growth Point demanding cash in all circumstances.

 The robberies were carried out within a space of two hours. The victims were identified as Jesman Pepukai, Allan Sanangura, Tevera Muridzi and one Murwisi.

The quartet reported the matter to Chivhu Police and Mutenga was arrested the following day. All the money was recovered.

He was also found in possession of the 303 rifle, a damaged magazine, two live rounds, an Itel phone, US$73 and $60.

Investigations carried out by the police revealed that the firearm was reported stolen by Mutenga from Cliff Security. 

The accused was not represented while Mr Marlon Makamba appeared for the state.
