U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that India has offered to slash tariffs on American goods to zero, even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen strengthening ties with China and Russia at a major summit in Beijing.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump described the U.S.-India trade relationship as “one-sided,” noting: “They have now offered to cut their tariffs to nothing, but it’s getting late. They should have done so years ago.”
The Indian Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to the remarks. Washington recently imposed steep duties — some as high as 50% — on Indian exports, sparking questions over the future of bilateral relations.
Modi, meanwhile, attended a gathering of more than 20 leaders under the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a China-backed bloc that has gained prominence amid Trump’s escalating tariff policies.
At the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping pressed his vision for a new economic and security order centered on the Global South, positioning it as a counterweight to U.S. influence.
