Two Reported Dead in Suspected Hijacking of Zim Bound Bus from Jo'burg

Two people have reportedly been killed in a violent hijacking of a Delta bus travelling from Johannesburg to Zimbabwe this Thursday morning, 9 October 2025, in what witnesses described as a terrifying cross-border robbery.

According to passengers narrating on social media, the attack occurred shortly after the bus passed the third toll gate along its route. Armed robbers who are believed to have boarded in Johannesburg allegedly drew weapons, ordering passengers to hand over their cash and mobile phones before shooting two people during the ordeal.

“Sekudutshulwe abantu babili sebeshonile — two people have been shot and are deceased,” one passenger posted on Facebook, urging families to urgently check on loved ones since most travellers were left without phones after the robbery.

Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and police say they have launched investigations although no confirmation of injuries or fatalities have been made.

This latest incident adds to a string of cross-border bus attacks that have targeted travellers between South Africa and Zimbabwe, particularly along major routes leading to Beitbridge over the past few years.

In April 2024, Zim Now reported a similar incident in which two Zimbabwean women were shot and injured during a robbery on a cross-border bus travelling from Johannesburg to Bulawayo. The assailants, posing as passengers, opened fire after seizing cash and valuables.

That attack, like Thursday’s, took place shortly after the bus passed its second toll gate.
