
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep concern over escalating political and security tensions in Madagascar, following reported movements within the army and street demonstrations in the capital, Antananarivo.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Youssouf welcomed the Malagasy government’s renewed commitment to dialogue and urged all political and military actors to show restraint and prioritize peaceful, inclusive solutions.
“The Chairperson urges all Malagasy stakeholders, both civilian and military, to exercise calm and restraint, and to prioritize peaceful and consensual solutions to the current situation,” the statement read.

Recalling the principles of the Lomé Declaration of 2000 and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, the AU Chairperson called on all parties in Madagascar to demonstrate “responsibility and patriotism” while safeguarding unity, stability, and constitutional order.
Youssouf reaffirmed the AU’s solidarity with the people and government of Madagascar and pledged the continental body’s readiness to support national and regional initiatives aimed at restoring institutional normalcy and consolidating peace.
Madagascar has experienced periodic political instability since its 2009 crisis, with tensions often linked to military involvement and contested political transitions. The AU continues to monitor the unfolding situation closely.
