Zimbabwe has commenced its inaugural African Peer Review Mechanism Targeted Review Process, a major step intended to align with the country’s vision of becoming an “Empowered and Prosperous Upper Middle-Income Society.”
The review, which focuses on "Economic Governance and Management," began on November 1, 2025, with the arrival of a delegation led by Ambassador Aly El-Hefny, a member of the APRM Panel of Eminent Persons and former Deputy Foreign Minister of Egypt.
The targeted review will run from November 3 to 18, 2025.

During this period, the APRM Secretariat—along with a designated Individual National Consultant, an International Consultant, and various stakeholders—will work across the country's provinces to consolidate data and analyze submissions from various Zimbabwean organizations and government departments.
The process adheres to the APRM tenets by involving a broad range of stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, and political parties. The final report, which will incorporate the findings and subsequent recommendations, is scheduled to be presented before the African Union in February 2026, on the sidelines of the AU Summit.
The APRM is a mutually agreed self-monitoring instrument adopted by African Union Member States to foster peer learning and accountability in governance. Zimbabwe voluntarily acceded to the APRM during the 29th Session of the APR Forum of Heads of State and Government on February 8, 2020, demonstrating a commitment to transparency and sustainable development.
According to a press statement by Philisiwe Chidawanyika, Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the outcome of the review "is poised to contribute towards the country's development journey and enhance visibility and influence in the African continent." Chidawanyika further noted that the APRM process is "reinforcing its strategic thrust on economic diplomacy" and will help Zimbabwe identify best practices and address challenges collectively.
