Netone launches Reverse Calling Feature

State-owned mobile network operator NetOne has officially launched a "Reverse Calling" feature, a strategic move designed to ensure that subscribers can remain connected even when they have zero airtime balance.

The new service allows a caller to initiate a mobile conversation at the expense of the recipient, provided the receiver agrees to cover the standard call rates.

The innovation is seen as a critical safety net for users in emergency situations or those currently affected by liquidity constraints.

To utilize the service, subscribers can prefix the recipient’s number with the code "164" or simply follow automated voice prompts when attempting a call with insufficient funds. According to the mobile giant, if a recipient declines the reverse call request, neither party is billed for the interaction.

By removing the immediate barrier of airtime, the operator expects to capture a significant volume of urgent and essential traffic that would otherwise be lost to "missed call" signals or dormant lines.

NetOne stated that "important conversations shouldn't wait," emphasizing that the feature is now live for all prepaid subscribers nationwide.

The service enters a competitive market where digital inclusion has become a priority for Zimbabwe’s Ministry of ICT, joining other recent infrastructure upgrades such as the expansion of 5G base stations and localized digital calling platforms.
