Angola has expressed a strong interest in partnering with Zimbabwe’s Geo Pomona Waste Management to adopt modern technologies that ensure cleaner cities and improved public health across the SADC region.
The Angolan Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Baltazar Diogo Cristovao, shared these insights following a detailed tour of the Geo Pomona facility in Harare yesterday. The diplomat was guided through the site by the company’s executive chairman and CEO, Dr. Dilesh Nguwaya, who demonstrated how the once-troubled dumpsite has been transformed into a world-class waste management hub.
During the visit, Ambassador Cristovao described the company as a leader in environmental protection, noting that its success offers a vital lesson for neighboring countries facing similar urban challenges.
“This company, Geo Pomona Waste Management, is a giant that has come to fight for the well-being of communities and to see the city clean,” the Ambassador said during an interview after the tour. “In Angola, we also have this problem of waste, and we would want to take the experience from Zimbabwe to Angola to have a healthy and clean city. When we have a clean city, it means our population will be healthy.”

The Geo Pomona facility is currently undergoing a massive transformation into a waste-to-energy plant. The project involves an engineering process called encapsulation, where layers of specialized fabric and soil are used to seal off old waste, stopping harmful gases from escaping and turning the area into green space. Once the main plant is fully operational, it is expected to incinerate approximately 1,000 tonnes of waste every day, generating between 16MW and 22MW of electricity for the national grid.
Ambassador Cristovao emphasized that such projects are essential for the entire continent and urged African nations to unite in supporting home-grown industrial solutions.
“I believe we should be united to give this benefit not only to the population of Zimbabwe, but to the African population as a whole,” he said. “The State only needs people when they are healthy, so Dr. Nguwaya is doing his part, and the doctors in the hospitals are also doing their part.”
Responding to the endorsement, Dr. Nguwaya stated that the interest from international partners serves as a great motivation for the company to keep innovating. He noted that the facility is not just a local achievement but a continental milestone in sustainable development.
“It is very impressive that other countries are coming here and learning the good works which Geo Pomona has done and continues to do,” Dr. Nguwaya said. “It means a lot to the Government of Zimbabwe, and also to Geo Pomona, that we are leading in terms of waste management on the continent.”
