ZIMRA Intercepts Nearly 700kg of Marijuana at Beitbridge Border

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority has thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large consignment of marijuana into the country, seizing nearly 700 kilogrammes of the illicit substance at the Beitbridge Border Post.

In a statement, the Authority said the drugs, weighing 691.67kg, were discovered on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, during a routine inspection conducted by customs officials.

“During a routine physical examination, our officials uncovered 34 packages of marijuana concealed within a trailer of a haulage truck carrying commercial goods,” ZIMRA said.

Authorities confirmed that the consignment originated from South Africa and was destined for Harare.

“Verification processes established that the marijuana weighed 691.67kg and had not been declared to customs authorities,” the statement added.

The illicit cargo was immediately confiscated, while the suspect linked to the smuggling attempt was handed over to law enforcement agencies for prosecution and further investigations.

ZIMRA warned that smuggling controlled substances poses serious risks to public health and undermines national laws.

“Smuggling controlled drugs or substances is illegal and carries severe legal consequences,” the Authority said, urging transporters and members of the public to comply with customs regulations and desist from illegal activities.
