ZANU PF Youth League Opposes Proposed US$3.6 Million Donation to Parliament

The ZANU PF Youth League has publicly rejected reports that businessman Wicknell Chivayo intends to donate US$3.6 million to Zimbabwe’s Parliament, arguing that such a move could undermine the integrity and independence of state institutions.

In their  statement, the Youth League said while it does not oppose philanthropic efforts, any financial contributions directed toward Parliament raise serious concerns about perceived influence over a key arm of government. The organization emphasized that Parliament must remain independent and free from any form of external pressure, whether real or perceived.

“Parliament is the backbone of democracy and must operate without the shadow of undue influence,” the statement read. “It cannot be seen as being bought or swayed through donations, be it in cash or kind.”

The Youth League acknowledged Chivayo’s past contributions to national development but urged him to channel his resources directly into community-based initiatives rather than state institutions. According to the group, such an approach would better serve citizens while avoiding constitutional and ethical complications.

“We strongly believe this proposed donation is misguided,” the Youth League said. “There are already constitutionally recognized mechanisms to support Members of Parliament, and the government has demonstrated its capacity to meet these obligations.”

The group further warned that accepting such donations could damage public trust in Parliament and set a troubling precedent for governance. It called on lawmakers to reject the offer in order to safeguard Zimbabwe’s democratic institutions.
