Rimbi Tours, one of whose buses was involved in an accident while racing another from a rival company, has filed a lawsuit against government over the suspension of their operating license.
The accident took place along the Harare-Nyamapanda highway and resulted in one person, the Rimbi bus conductor, losing his life while several other people were injured.
Transport Minister Felix Mhona confirmed the submission of the lawsuit, but was quick to state that the licenses were not revoked but suspended and the terms and conditions of the suspensions were clear.
“The good thing about a suspension is, it can be 24 hours or 48 hours but the assumption from the Ministry was that the operator would sit and reason together with the Ministry. However, they have decided to take the approach of approaching the courts. The matter is now seized with the courts.
“It was a matter of compliance, checking, realigning and we thought maybe since this was something which was a major concern to the public, we were supposed to move with speed and try to align.
“The other operator, Zebra Kiss, has decided to approach the Ministry from a holistic perspective also taking charge and accepting they were responsible. They appealed to the Ministry and took corrective measures, of which they did,” Minister Mhona said.
