The Zimbabwean government is taking strong action to stop road accidents before the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays. Traffic accidents are costing the country about US$500 million every year, and the number of people dying on the roads has risen to seven or eight every day.
Transport Minister Felix Mhona said the high death toll is a big concern. He pointed out that losing even one life is too many, and drivers need to be much more careful.
Police say that bad driving habits and human error are the main causes of these crashes. Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi warned that officers will take tough action against anyone breaking road rules. He added that police will pull unsafe vehicles off the road and stop illegal taxis.

The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe is also working with the police to encourage safer driving. Council Chairperson Kura Sibanda noted that about 2,000 people die in road accidents in Zimbabwe every year, and fixing the problem starts with responsible drivers.
Last year, at least 194 people died in road accidents during the same holiday period. Officials hope that more police checks and stronger rules will keep people safe and save lives this year.
