Zimbabwe's Under-20 men’s handball goalkeeper Nhongonhema Davis has emerged as one of the continent’s top performers at the ongoing 33rd African Men’s Junior Handball Championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
Davis has broken into the tournament’s top 10 goalkeepers after recording 12 saves, placing him among the leading shot-stoppers after the second day of competition.
Zimbabwe Under-20 coach Tafadzwa Madure praised Davis for his performances, saying the goalkeeper’s achievement reflects the hard work and preparation the team put in ahead of the continental competition.
“We are very proud of Davis and what he has achieved so far in the tournament. Being among the top 10 goalkeepers in Africa at this stage of the competition is a big achievement for him and for Zimbabwean handball,” said Madure.
“He has been working extremely hard in training, and his performances show the commitment and discipline he has brought into the team. As coaches, we have always believed in his ability, and it is encouraging to see him competing with some of the best young players on the continent.”

Madure said Davis’s performances could also inspire other young handball players in Zimbabwe.
“This should motivate other upcoming players back home. It shows that Zimbabwe has talent and that, given the right opportunities and exposure, our players can compete at the highest level in Africa.”
Zimbabwe is competing against some of Africa’s strongest junior handball nations at the continental championship after qualifying for the tournament by winning the 2026 IHF Trophy Africa Zone VI competition.
Madure said the team would continue working hard as the tournament progresses.
“We are not putting pressure on individual players, but we are happy when they perform well. Davis’s saves are important for the team, and we hope he continues with the same confidence and determination as we fight for positive results in our remaining matches.”
