Chitown cracks down on illegal dumping of garbage

Chitungwiza Municipality has embarked on a crackdown against residents dumping rubbish in undesignated areas.

The operation which is code-named “Marara ako wakaisa kupi”, is a corrective measure to lessen the dumping of rubbish where residents who fail to show their waste will have to explain where they dumped it.

Chitungwiza Municipality Health Director, Dr Tonderai Kasu, said Council has published a timetable of when refuse is collected in different areas, and residents should acquaint themselves with the timetable.

“Yes, it is true that we are contemplating corrective interventions with respect to solid waste management after having noticed with concern that illegal garbage dumps are accumulating even in areas where we are doing weekly door-to-door refuse collections.

“Such areas include, but are not limited to, Limbani Shopping Centre in Zengeza 5. Such areas are being serviced by our refuse trucks weekly, but residents are not bringing out their bins for us to collect, preferring instead to dump garbage illegally in open spaces.

“The advice that I would give to residents of Chitungwiza is that we should all be responsible, accountable and conscientious, about how we dispose of our waste, and none of us should dispose waste illegally.  We all have a collective responsibility to create a clean and healthy environment in our community,” he said.

Dr Kasu added that illegal dumping results in wastage of limited resources, especially in areas where the council is already doing door-to-door collections.
