Zimbabwe is being represented by Vice President, who is also Minister of Health and Child Care, General (Retired) Dr Constantino Chiwenga, at the 5th edition of the Global Ministerial Summit on Patient Safety. The summit is in Montreux, Switzerland, and will run between February 23-24.
Being held under the theme ‘Less Harm, Better Care - From Resolution to Implementation’, it seeks to address the implementation of practical measures, with lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic playing an important role.
VP Chiwenga will join other health ministers and experts from across the globe in coming up with solutions towards ensuring the safety of patients.
‘‘We have come here to share ideas and discuss patient safety in our hospitals and in our medical facilities. We will be discussing quite a number of issues with the World Health Organisation and other global funders under the United Nations umbrella to do with health,’’ he said.
The Global Ministerial Summits on Patient Safety which began in 2016, have succeeded in raising awareness, as well as creating and sustaining the momentum of the global patient safety movement, as evidenced by the adoption of the WHA resolution (WHA72.6) "Global Action on Patient Safety" in May 2019.
The resolution enabled the first-ever World Patient Safety Day in September 2019.
