Turkish Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ms Berna Kasnakli Versteden, has expressed appreciation for the role played by Zimbabwe through the humanitarian assistance it has given to her country to deal with the effects of a recent disastrous earthquake.
Zimbabwe provided containers loaded with humanitarian aid and equipment for victims.
“We are grateful to Zimbabwe for the aid and search teams that went to Turkey. The President also signed the book of condolences.
“We continue to receive messages of condolences and support from all over the world and for that, we are grateful. The earthquake has broken families with some still missing. We are trying to focus on those that need aid in terms of shelter, food, medical assistance and in some areas the search is still ongoing,” she said.
MedTech Holdings CEO, Mr Afzal Motiwala, last week travelled to Turkey to give aid in searching for survivors.
“Our team has travelled to assist in the search, rescue and recovery operation of people who have suffered in the earthquake. We went with food, clothing, generators and search and rescue equipment.
“What we saw in Turkey was devastating as most buildings had collapsed. We set up a food kitchen in Islahia to feed 10 000 people a day and assisted with meals, tents and heating. We wanted to show that as Zimbabweans, we stood strong with our brothers in Turkey in this time of need," Mr Motiwala said.
The Zimbabwe-Turkey office is currently coordinating the aid operations on behalf of Zimbabwe, as guided by Zimbabwe Integrated Shipping Services president and CEO Eli Glickman.
