The National University of Science and Technology Student Representative Council has reached a consensus with the institution concerning fee hikes for the second semester.
This comes after NUST SRC called for students to stay away from school and any other campus business after the university had pegged new fees at USD$720 on a semester that is less than 3 months.
In a statement, the SRC said the council had reached an agreement that is favourable for students.
“We are happy to inform you that the recently hiked fees of US$720 HAVE BEEN REVOKED AND REMOVED FROM YOUR portals. Students will now continue to pay the pre-set ZWL fees structure adopted in September 2022.
“We encourage all students to proceed to pay the fees they were paying last semester and register. To preserve the value of the finances, the same fees will be pegged at the prevailing interbank rate, and the USD fee structure will be taken down and replaced with last semester’s updated ZWL fees structure.
“This is a significant achievement for us as a student’s union and demonstrates the power of unity. Together, we can stop the privatisation of education and ensure that our voices are heard,” reads a statement from the students’ body.
The SRC had given the university administration a 24-hour ultimatum to revise the fees hikes or they were going to approach the courts for remedy.
