Two 15-year-old boys, Phenias Machikiti and Shelton Mutonda from Gwarada Village stumbled into a body of a male adult after they had seen vultures circling the area.
As a result, Manicaland police are appealing to families who may have a missing male relative to come and identify the body, which was found in an advanced stage of decomposition in Chitora on Sunday last week.
Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the matter and added that the body was found with both ears, right foot, left palm and right forefinger missing.
Chitora is located on the 35km peg along the Mutare-Masvingo Highway.
The matter was reported to the police and the body was taken to Victoria Chitepo Hospital (formerly Mutare Provincial Hospital) for post-mortem.
“Upon arrival, the duo saw vultures circling the river bank, and went to see what was happening. They saw a human body lying lifeless. They went to inform Chiriga Nomore, 56, who told other villagers. Among the villagers who were told of the sad development was Mukwiridza Nicholas, 50, of Gutaurare Village who suspected that the body of the deceased could have been of his father Patrick Mukwiridza,” said Inspector Muzondo.
Police added that families with elderly people must monitor their movements and accompany them where possible owing to the rising high number of elderly people who wander off alone and are found dead near water bodies.
In Masvingo, Nyama Kurebwa, 90, from Jinjika Village under Chief Nyakunhuwa in Zaka was found floating in Veza River after he went relieve himself.
