Sungura musician and leader of Njerema Boys, Paradzai Mesi, has been arrested after he was caught stealing groceries in a store at Henstone Farm in Glendale in the early hours of the morning.

According to reports, one of the witnesses said that Mesi was left alone in the store when his accomplices had run away.

“Mesi lives on the farm with his family, he left his home on Wednesday spending the day on a drinking spree. He was caught stealing at Sabau grocery store when he was handing over loot to some of his accomplices who were outside the store.

“He was beaten by people who later felt sorry for him because they know he is not well. He was then taken to Henstone police base, and later to Glendale where he is being kept.

“He, however, said he was forced by robbers whom he met while coming from the bottle store. According to him, they forced him to take the groceries from the store while they were outside receiving them.

“Mesi said he could not fight off the thieves as he was alone and drunk,” the witness said.

Acting Mashonaland Central spokesperson Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha confirmed the incident havinghappened,, but said his office was yet to be furnished with more details.

In June 2016, Mesi was urged by promoters and fans to stop abusing alcohol as it was affecting his music career. He, however, defended himself and said that no amount of alcohol can affect one's talent. He remained adamant and said that he was not going to stop drinking beer.

In an interview in July 2017, Mesi admitted to taking a cough syrup called Broncleer or Bronco. He said that he took the syrup to relieve stress although it made him abuse his wife.

Mesi assumed the reins at Njerama Boys in 2000 and they released an album “Zviripachena” that became an instant hit.

He left music for cotton farming. He tried to produce cotton in Muzarabani, but it failed to yield results. The “Tirihuruva” hitmaker then relocated to Glendale in 2014 where he tried to revive Njerama Boys but his efforts were in vain.
