With 10 As at the ordinary level, Roy Phiri’s future looked so bright but at the same time bleak, as his parents could not afford to send him for Advanced Level studies.

In Zimbabwe, education is regarded as the key out of poverty as an educated person is guaranteed different opportunities.

“I passed my O Level with a 10 As and I want to thank Delta Beverages for coming on board with the bursary as it was going to be difficult for my parents to send me to A Level.

“I passed my A Level studies and I will be studying Actuarial Science at the University of Zimbabwe starting in August,” Phiri said.

Education has remained the undisputed key enabler for human development and the cornerstone of the Zimbabwean socio-economic transformation since the attainment of independence in 1980.

As most parents struggle to send their children for tertiary studies, Delta Beverages has chipped in to support the vulnerable students by unveiling a bursary scholarship programme for high school and university students.

Speaking at the bursary induction function in Harare today, DELTA CORPORATION, General Manager - Corporate

Affairs, Patricia Murambinda said that the programme is meant to assist students who would have done well in their “O” Level examinations.

“We are looking for these students who are economically challenged some could have lost their parents or one parents.

“We work with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to come with a number of children that would be selected. What we do is to get in a partnership with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in each province. We work through the office of Provincial Education Directors where they do select the disadvantaged students who would have excelled in their O Level exams. After they have made the selection, they make a submission to Delta and we normally request three students from each province and out the three students, we are able to select one student from each province to make the number 10,” Murambinda said.

She added that the company is also assisting low-level grades of its workers and assisting them with the same package.

The package for university students is capped at US$1 500 per semester and the package for high school students is US$500 per term at any government school. The package is also iced with an allowance.
