Police have confirmed the death of one person when four vehicles went up in smoke following a road crash near Chivi turn-off along the Masvingo-Beitbridge Highway on Monday afternoon.

“A haulage truck which was travelling towards Beitbridge with five passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with another haulage truck travelling in the opposite direction, with two passengers on board. Both trucks caught fire and were burnt beyond recognition,” police said in an update yesterday.

Contrary to social media reports claiming that there were about six vehicles including two Toyota Wishes with many passengers who failed to escape, police has confirmed that a total of four vehicles were involved.

“As a result of the explosion, Toyota Fun Cargo and Toyota Premier vehicles caught fire and were burnt beyond recognition. All occupants from Toyota Fun Cargo and Toyota Premier vehicles escaped unhurt,” the police said.

It is not yet clear if the deceased was a driver or passenger on one of the trucks.
