Somebody important has died. We mourn and in the same breath we celebrate Kelly Rusike. He was more than a musician, he was a humble and talented individual with a heart of gold. Most of his work was behind the scenes, his impact on the music industry was immeasurable. Kelly produced over 50% of the jingles and radio adverts in the last three decades, touching the lives of more than 10 million Zimbabweans, yet many did not even know his name.
Who can forget about the Ngwerewere sadza adverts in 1985-6 and the Merlin towels Ads, who can forget Cecilia the song he put together with his brothers in the 80s.
Kelly had a very infectious yet humble personality. A man of peace always eager to find common ground in an amicable way.
Kelly’s voice was not only melodious but manifestated his humility and stature just like a work of art God himself put together.
At the peak of his career Kelly and the Jazz Invitation comprising of Victor Duarte, Filbert Marowa, amai Nyari Prudence Katomeni Mbofana and many others rocked Jazz 105, Book Cafe, The Manengberg and many corporate and private events like weddings and birthday parties.
Today, we celebrate, honor and remember Kelly's life. He was a silent assassin, a pillar of Afrojazz in Zimbabwe, and a man whose talent, humility and kindness touched the lives of many.
Kelly's laughter was infectious and his personality radiated warmth and kindness. He collaborated with some of the top broadcasters in Zimbabwe, recording ads that have become iconic in our collective memory. He also worked on numerous other projects, such as the Cool Crooners - a group of vibrant elders from Bulawayo who revived 60s Kwela Afrojazz, showcasing their talent in France and other European countries.
Though Kelly may never have sought the limelight, his passion for music and creating work that would touch others was evident in all that he did. His contribution to the industry will always be cherished and his legacy will continue to shine.
Kelly Rusike lived his life with grace and humility. He dedicated his talent to his craft, and his work touched the lives of many without the need for recognition or fame. His impact on Zimbabwean music cannot be measured, and the void he leaves in our hearts is a testament to the greatness he embodied.Anyone who visited Shed Studios in the 90s would know the impact this guy had on the musical direction Zimbabwean music was to take.
We thank God for welcoming his son home, and we find solace in knowing that Kelly is resting in eternal peace. As we continue to mourn his loss, we will celebrate his life, his contributions to the music industry, and his unwavering spirit.
As we say goodbye to Kelly Rusike, we do not mourn his passing but celebrate his life. He was a son of the soil, an icon of the Zimbabwean music industry whose legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
