ZimParks ranger up for murder

A Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority employee, who shot who a man who was in a car after entering a recreational area without any warning, has been taken to court.

Walter Rodgers, 34, of Chinamhora, Domboshava appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged with murder.

The State, through prosecutor Zebediah Bofu, alleges that on June 10, at around 1800 hours, the deceased Samuel Chihwari was in a Toyota Voxy, which was coming from ZimParks Lake Chivero Estate towards Harare along Lake Chivero Road.

The road is a public road used by people who would have visited the lake’s recreational places and chalets.

The car had nine passengers on board and was being driven by one Edwin Dick, who was the owner of the car.

As they approached the main exit gate to Lake Chivero Estate, they came across Rodgers, who was in the company of another ZimParks ranger.

The two were standing next to a Honda Fit with unknown registration numbers.

They did not signal the driver to stop hence he drove past.

Suddenly, they heard two gun shots that were fired from behind the car and the car’s rear windscreen was smashed.

The driver stopped the car to check and they discovered that the now-deceased had been shot twice below the shoulder blade.

One of the passengers called one game ranger, identified as Kanongore, who told him to rush the now-deceased to the hospital.

The driver then went to ZRP White House base where he made a report before taking the now-deceased to White House 24 Clinic where he was further referred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for further treatment.

On June 12, Rodgers was charged with attempted murder and was taken to the Harare Magistrates’ Courts where he was placed on remand.

On June 18, the now-deceased succumbed to the serious injuries sustained from the shooting.

Chibanda ordered Rodgers to appear in court on July 7 and advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.
