Zim Ninja academy Chief Instructor and newly-appointed Zimbabwe Karate Union vice president Shidoshi-ho Wilfred Mashaya held a Zimbabwe Bujinkan Ninjutsu Martial Arts grading over the weekend.

The grading is a positive step towards the development of Martial Arts in the country.

The grading event was led by the country’s representative and pioneer of the discipline, Chief Instructor Shidoshi-ho Mashaya. Mashaya holds a black belt in the discipline making him Zimbabwe’s first certified ninja and the first authorised to hold such grading.

The Bujinkan Ninjitsu martial arts discipline originates from Japan under its founder Soke Masaaki Hatsumi of Japan.

More than 60 participants, including men, women and children where the students were grading to Kyu belts, which are coloured belts below the black belt.

Martial Arts grading is a technical examination where students are tested on what they have learnt through training in that respective Martial Arts style syllabus.

The Zimbabwe Bujinkan Ninjutsu is under the guidance of European grandmaster Dai Shihan Lazarevic Predrag, who incidentally, is also Mashaya’s mentor.

Mashaya, the 2018 Zimbabwe Sportsperson of the Year and regional sportsman of the year is a holder of four black belts from different martial arts disciplines. The Hall of Fame and multi-award winning martial artist says he is on a mission to spread the goodness of martial arts in the country and his academy practises five martial arts disciplines namely Kyokushin Karate, Bujinkan Ninjutsu, Kobudo (martial arts weapons), self-defence and Nunchaku-do.

Martial arts comes with many benefits; these include self-defence, survival skills, physical fitness, stress management, boosting confidence and esteem, brevity, flexibility and discipline.

The Zimbabwe Karate Union is spreading martial arts in Zimbabwe by promoting it to kids, women and men as they believe that the skills are a necessity in one’s life and should benefit everyone.

On his election as ZKU vice president, Mashaya, who is also known as The Zim Ninja, said he felt humbled to be elected. “I am looking forward to do my best for the good of ZKU and its members as I believes there is vast talent under the ZKU which needs to be groomed, nurtured and supported so as to conquer the world. I believe in working together as ZKU with unity of purpose so as to yield fruitful results for the good of martial arts in particular and sport in general. I also think we need to set a good example to the young generation,” Mashaya said.
