Zim date Nigeria, South Africa in WC qualifiers

Zim Now Writer

Hot on the heels of having their ban from international activity lifted by world soccer governing body Fifa, Zimbabwe was yesterday drawn into Group C for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers along with Nigeria, Rwanda, Lesotho, Benin and South Africa.

The draw was held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire yesterday.

Owing to their Fifa ban, Zimbabwe still has to assemble a squad and ensure that their facilities, which were also banned for use in hosting international matches, meet Fifa standards.

Following their readmission into the international fold, Fifa ordered Zimbabwe to appoint a Zifa Normalisation Committee, mandated with running the country’s football affairs in the absence of a substantive Zifa board.

The Lincoln Mutasa-led Zifa Normalisation Committee has a lot to do in light of the fact that the qualifiers start in November this year, especially in ensuring they assemble a squad and also upgrade the country’s stadiums.

Although Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry has already expressed optimism that the Warriors will host their visitors at the National Sports Stadium, which was closed in June due to a health hazard, work on the facility’s facelift is yet to commence.
