Zhao was arrested on this Wednesday. A source privy to the full story of E Creator founder Zhao Jiatong told Zim Now how the arrest happened:

Zhao Jiatong must have done a private little celebration dance when he got into the RGMIA departure lounge to board flight EK 714 departing at 18:30 hours on Wednesday July 12.

Why not? The most sought after man of the moment in Zimbabwe had successfully gone through the airport security checks and was just waiting for his boarding call coming up at any moment and he would be gone.

But unfortunately for him, an airport security official took inordinate interest in the passenger and set alarm bells ringing through the system.

Around 17:30 Officer-in-Charge ZRP RGMIA, Inspector Pokoto called  detectives from Facial Recognition System, MFFU, Law & Order and PI and told them that there was a passenger that they might want to interview before he flew out..

The security agents liased with the airline to fish out Zhao and soon he was answering some questions.

Predictably he denied being a wanted man. He was just an ordinary passenger in the economy class heading to Dubai.

Facial checks against witness descriptions convinced the detectives that this was indeed the man against whom several reports had been made for fraud.

These included cases at Harare Central and Commercial Crime Division including cases filed as DR317/23 and DR36/7/23.

The detectives then checked Zhao’s phone and found evidence of a number of transactions involving huge amounts carried out in the few day preceding days.

These included local and foreign names adding to the suspicion that Zhao may have been involved in illicit financial activities.

The detectives were convinced that there was sufficient evidence pointing to the high probability of the Zhao Jiatong in their custody being the same Zhao Jiatong, wanted founder of E-Creator.

They laised with the airline and airport officials to get Zhao’s effects offloaded.

Zhao was then taken to the police station for further inquiries by detectives from Facial Recognition System, Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit and Law & Order.

They duly surrendered him to the Commercial Crimes Division which is working on his case.
