A woman has been arraigned before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts on allegations of allegedly defrauding over US$3 000.
Kondiwani Mayelezi, 43, is accused of defrauding Evans Gabriel Mapfumo of Western Triangle, Highfield.
The State alleges that sometime in October 2021, Mapfumo wanted to import a pick- up truck and approached one Kudakwashe Tadhliya who is believed to be Mayelezi’s boyfriend referred him to Tinashe Sithole whom he said was his cousin and was purportedly based in the United States.
Mapfumo was given Kudakwashe Sithole’s cellphone number and started communicating with him on Whatsapp.
The two parties agreed that the purchase price of a Mazda B2500 double cab truck would be US$5 050 and if Mapfumo pays two thirds of the price the car would be delivered to him.
Sithole instructed Mapfumo to deposit US$1 600 into an FBC account in November 2022 and he complied.
He told Mapfumo that the car would be shipped to Namibia and would be driven to Kazungula Border Post where Kudakwashe Tadhiwa would drive and deliver it to Mapfumo.
Mapfumo was told that the car would be delivered to him in early January 2023.
Basing on the promises, Mapfumo deposited a total of US$3 850.
On February 2, 2023, Sithole sent Mapfumo a Whatsapp message stating that he was at One Commando Barracks in Cranborne and that he should meet him there and collect the car.
When Mapfumo went there he was told by Sithole over the phone that he should wait at the main gate. However, Sithole never showed up with the vehicle.
Mapfumo’s efforts to get car from the accused persons has been futile ever since.
Tadhliwa, if contacted, would demand more money from Mapfumo.
In July 2023, Mayelezi, went to Mapfumo, demanding US$200 for the release of the car.
She promised to lead and show him where his car was parked.
Mapfumo alerted detectives before giving the money to Mayelezi, leading to her arrest.
As a result, US$3 850 was stolen and nothing was recovered.
Mayelezi will appear in court on September 14.
