Harare residents have taken the City of Harare to task over the excessive fees the local authority charges for shop licenses, which they allege to be hampering businesses.
The City charges US$72 as inspection fees for a licence application. If the inspection goes well, businesses then pay the actual licence fee which varies depending on the desired category.
On average, it amounts to approximately US$1 000.
Founder of Harare-based leadership and motivation company Infinite Inspiration Group, Simba Nyamadzawo recently wrote to Harare Mayor Advocate Jacob Mafume complaining over the high fees, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises who have limited financial resources.
“Your Worship @JMafume the shop license fees for @cohsunshinecity are exorbitant. What’s your take on that and can they be reviewed downwards. Alternatively, could you break them down to allow quarterly payments? Tinzweiwo Mambo,” Nyamadzawo wrote.
Harare has been on a blitz, demanding licences from shop owners operating in the City. Small businesses such as tailoring shops, who share rented space are charged individually, compromising their viability.
