A man who ran away from the police while in handcuffs and stole a car which he was involved in an accident with has been denied bail.
Takudzwa Mhlanga, 22, of Hatcliffe, appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts on theft and escaping lawful from lawful custody.
The State, through prosecutor Zororai Nkomo, alleges that on August 23, at around 1700 hours, Mhlanga was arrested accused of unlawful entry into premises at Consortium Location, Hatcliffe and he was warned for his charge.
When police were investigating Consortium tuck shops, Mhlanga, who was handcuffed, bolted away from the police and jumped into complainant’s car, a Toyota Auris.
He went on the steering wheel, started the car and drove off.
The police, who had an FN rifle, fired one warning shot in the air but Mhlanga did not stop.
The police were then offered transport to pursue Mhlanga by one Prosper Mutimutema, who was driving a white Toyota Hilux twin cab.
Mhlanga was later arrested after an approximate five-kilometre chase when he lost control of the Auris and was involved in a serious accident.
The car was damaged beyond repair.
He was ordered to appear in court on August 28 for bail application.
