Chitungwiza Municipality has begun the process of evicting rate defaulters with an aim to repossess the properties it leased out to them years back.
A case in point is the recent eviction of former heavyweight champion Arigoma Chiponda from the Area Board at Huruyadzo Shopping Centre, which he used as a gym and, yesterday, more evictions by the Messenger of Court at the Zengeza 5 Beerhall which had since been sub-divided into small retail outlets.
Acting Town Clerk Japson Nemuseso confirmed the development saying the properties belong to the community and it is ideal that it benefits them.
“Yes, we have an operation whereby we are evicting leases who have not been able to meet their obligation of paying rentals to council.
“You may appreciate that such properties which include beerhalls and halls belong to the community and it would want to see them generate some form of income and when it does not, then there is great cause for concern. As council, we are mandated to take a role and that role is to ensure that contractual obligations are fulfilled.
“We also have instances where the people we have given leases to further sublet the buildings or shops in question to others with an aim to get a profit and these too have failed to pay. We have, thus, engaged the courts for eviction orders,” he said.
Nemuseso said according to Council bylaws the next stage would be to advertise for issuance of new leases.
Meanwhile, the Town Clerk confirmed that incoming councilors for the 2023-28 term will be sworn in on Friday morning.
