A ZRP officer who allegedly stole a docket which had an accused person’s name and in order to release him has appeared in court.
Innocent Mazambani, 31, of Norton, appeared before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa accused of criminal abuse as a public officer.
The State, through prosecutor Pardon Dziva, alleges that on September 6, 2023, Mazambani reported for duty at ZRP Borrowdale and was deployed to Charge Office.
At around 2000 hours, Borrowdale police arrested one Amos Tsopotsa on allegations of theft.
Tsopotsa was detained under ZRP Borrowdale Detention Book and made to stay in the Charge Office.
On September 7, 2023 at around 0300hours, Mazambani escorted Tsopotsa to the toilet.
While outside, Mazambani released Tsopotsa to go home which was inconsistent with his duties.
Mazambani then returned to the Charge Office and tore off the Prisoners Detention Book page where Tsopotsa was recorded before stealing the docket which had been opened against him.
A report was made at ZRP Borrowdale, leading to the arrest of Mazambani.
The torn Prisoners Detention Book page and the docket which was opened against Tsopotsa were not recovered.
Mazambani was ordered to deposit US$150 as bail.
He will appear on November 11, for his routine remand.
