Journalism should focus on responses to social problems, not just the problems themselves, a training discussion on Solution Journalism with the Young Journalists Association held in Harare yesterday heard.
Africa Centre for Solutions Journalism co-ordinator, William Chikoto said journalists must go beyond exposing wrongdoings to explore how people are solving problems
“Journalism is not about she said, he said. Journalist act as whistle-blowers and expose wrongdoing, but have little role to play beyond that,” Chikoto said.
ACSJ coordinators taught the young journalist on how to write solution stories.
Young Journalist were given opportunities to share their ideas and thoughts on solution reporting.
ACSJ co-ordinator, Monica Cheru said that solution journalism is about engaging people to be part of the story in creating the society that they want to live in instead of just bombarding them with bad news.
Solutions or constructive journalism is a growing global trend arising from the need to go beyond narrating events and developments to give agency to affected people.
ACSJ is set to hold trainings and mentoring with YOJA and other organisations.
