Newly-appointed Information Minister, Dr Jenfan Muswere has pledged to create a media advisory committee that will be made up of editors from across the sector to work with the ministry to implement effective communication of government programmes.

“The media is a key pillar in development as it is crucial in creating a two way communication system that not only educates citizenry on national issues, but also carries the voice of ordinary people to policymakers and thus influence strategy development, said Dr Muswere while talking to representatives from the private sector media at a meeting held at Munhumutapa today.

The meeting was attended by representatives from Zim Now, Alpha Media Holdings, Jester Media Group, Zim Live, Chat 265 and AB Communications among others.

The minister said when media constantly hammers on the negatives and ignores all positives, they repel potential investors and are themselves affected by the negative business environment. So, they should be constructive when reporting on developments and events in the country in full so as to give a complete picture.

“We are all affected. However, your report has a bearing on you,” said Dr Muswere.

Media practitioners told the minister that polarisation stems from discriminatory practices by government in terms of access to information, key officials and advertising support in favour of state media.

Others raised the need to consider tax rebates for importation of equipment so that media houses can access more up-to-date tools in order to up standards.

The minister pledged to look at the issues raised and said that he is open to solutions from media practitioners on the best way forward.

“We should work together. We must unite. The message is Zimbabwe comes first,” said Dr Muswere.
