City of Victoria Falls has elected new mayor after 27-year-old Councillor Prince Thuso Moyo of the Citizens Coalition for Change was voted into office in an opposition-led election that was marred by controversy.

The process of electing the Mayor was concluded this Monday with a fair share of challenges which included postponements last Tuesday and this Monday morning.

The election was on Tuesday last week disrupted by disgruntled residents who were irked by the presence of Bulawayo Deputy Mayor, Councillor Donaldson Mabutho, whom they accused of having been assigned by the CCC leadership to impose a mayoral candidate.

Victoria Falls Town Clerk, Ronnie Dube then wrote to the Minister of Local Government and Public Works Honourable Winston Chitando for guidance, resulting in the elections being held this Monday.

“We have a challenge of water in this town and there is an over US$4 million water sanitation and hygiene (Wash) project phase one under implementation, we want this project to be completed soonest. We hope the project will be completed before the end of the year to provide adequate water to the citizens. This is our immediate task,” said the new mayor.

The residents and the city’s Town Clerk also outlined their expectations.

“The previous council had challenges including corruption. We implore the incoming Mayor and his team to prioritize service delivery to the people of Victoria Falls. They should also desist from all corrupt activities and focus on their core business,” said the Victoria Falls Combined Residents Association, chairperson, Kelvin Moyo.

“This is what we have been waiting for, council business must now proceed smoothly as we now have the Mayor and his team in place,” said Town Clerk Dube.

The City of Victoria Falls is currently seized with improving water supply in the resort city.
