Seke Road police checkpoint gridlock frustrates Chitungwiza commuters

There is real chaos on Seke Road as the police checkpoint just before the Hunyani River bridge causes traffic to stretch as far back as close to Delport Road.

Some vehicles have created an extra lane running adjacent the highway near Nyoka Hideout.

Motorists who spoke to this publication were complaining about the delay in getting home after a long day’s work.

Adam Jonasi, who runs a spray painting business in Graniteside, said he did not mind the police operation but said the delays were punishing.

“While I think the police must be allowed to do their work, they should also realise the pain they are causing motorists. Even if an emergency happens and there is need to get someone to hospital, it will not be possible,” he said, adding that it will be worse going into the peak hours of the day around 5pm-7pm.

An elderly woman who said she was on her way from Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals said her granddaughter was hospitalised the whole week following a road traffic accident on Mutare Road but unfortunately she could not get home early following her discharge.

“This does not make sense. What exactly are they looking for? I am coming from hospital to get my granddaughter and daughter. My granddaughter is the one who is crying in the back seat. She is tired and in pain as she is not fully recovered. If there was another route into Chitungwiza that does not go via the bridge, we could have asked the driver to take that one,” she fumed.

This writer spent over 30 minutes in the traffic hold-up, which had three lanes forming on Seke Road, which ordinarily has two lanes.

An extra one formed a fourth as vehicles inched towards the Prince Edward Water Works where the police checkpoint is.

Efforts to get comment from Officer Commanding Chitungwiza district, Chief Superintendent Muguti were fruitless as his phone went unanswered, while national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi’s mobile was not reachable.
