Garry Mapanzure’s family has dismissed rumours that he was drinking before the accident saying the video that is doing rounds on social media was taken back in 2020.

In a statement, they said the video was taken in Mutare where the musician had gone to perform.

“There is a video circulating on many social Media pages showing the late Garry Mapanzure pouring alcohol onto the ground. To clarify, this Video was actually taken in the Home ownership area of Dangamvura, August in Mutare in 2020. Garry was performing that night at Barcode his Sushi Season Tour.

“This video is being used to convince/ insinuate to people that Garry was drinking before the accident which is false,” they said.

They urged anyone who was peddling the video to stop and have compassion and respect on the deceased.

“We have lost 3 young lives and let’s come together and pay our condolences in a respectful manner,” said the family members.

Born Garikai Mapanzure, Garry became popular six years ago with his song Wapunza.

The 25-year-old Afropop musician succumbed to injuries sustained on Friday morning from a fatal car accident that claimed two other lives of close relatives in Masvingo on Thursday night.

Mapanzure will be buried today at Lawn Cemetery in Masvingo along the Mutare Highway at 10am, according to his uncle Birani Gibson.

“Garry will be buried at the Lawn Cemetery along Mutare Highway before the 4 Infantry Brigade turn-off on Sunday at 10am,” he told The Mirror in a telephone interview.

Mourners are gathered at the family’s house in Morningside, Masvingo.
