The Department of Civil Protection it is not sure yet of the areas which are at risk of the two cyclones predicted to hit the country this rainy season.

This comes as two cyclones have been forecast to hit Zimbabwe in the 2023/24 rainfall season, which the DCP has said will affect about 250 000 people.

Speaking to Zim Now, Department of Civil Protection Director Nathan Nkomo said they are not sure yet of the areas which are at risk from the predicted cyclones.

“We are not sure yet of the areas which are at risk, we are based on probability.

“We are likely to have worst destructions this season because with the few rains that we received we experienced destructions of trees, infrastructure and children killed with lightening.”

Director Nkomo added that the 250 000 projected figure is not the exact number, it was for planning purposes.

However, most Zimbabweans do not seem to believe some forecasts, especially from the Meteorological Services Department, with University of Zimbabwe student Jacob Harry Ndlovu saying: “The MSD has told us it is going to rain and on several occasions but it never did. With the cyclones, nothing is going to happen. Things will be okay. No cyclone will ever come to Zimbabwe.”

Everisto Mapfumo chose to differ, arguing: “Remember the warnings that were issued prior to Cyclone Idai, which ravaged mainly Manicaland Province, were never listened to. Once I know the areas that might be affected, I will try to be as far away from there as possible. You do not live twice, so you cannot gamble with life.”

The DCP argued the public to avoid standing under trees during raining, wear protective clothing and stay away from windows and doors during heavy rain and strong winds.
