Tshabangu recalls Citizens Coalition for Change interim secretary-general Sengezo Tshabangu, whom the opposition party has labelled an imposter, has recalled Kwekwe Mayor, Henry Madzorera, his deputy, Melody Chingarande, and another councilor, Simon Machisvo.
This comes as 13 CCC MPs and five senators were recently recalled, before a High Court to halt further expulsions of elected opposition members was implemented.
As with the other recalls before, Tshabangu argued that the ejected councillors were no longer affiliated with the opposition party.
Acting Local Government Minister, Daniel Garwe, in a November 13 letter addressed to the Kwekwe City Town Clerk’s office, wrote: “I wish to inform you that I am in receipt of a letter from the Citizens Coalition for Change stating that the following councillors have ceased to be members of the Citizens Coalition for Change political party.”
Garwe said the recalls were in accordance with section 278 (1) of the country’s Constitution, “as read with Section (1) (k),” and declared the mentioned wards as vacant.
The Minister further instructed the Kwekwe City Council: “In terms of Section 121 of the Electoral Act, please proceed to inform the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission of these vacancies.”
When the batch of 13 legislators were recalled, the announcement was only done in the National Assembly on November 14 with Speaker, Advocate Jacob Mudenda insisting that the High Court order was issued after the recalls had been made.
