Construction work on the multimillion-dollar Vungu Dam in Silobela is progressing smoothly, with contractors making significant strides to ensure the project’s completion within the stipulated timeframe. This high-impact undertaking, valued at US$87 million, is slated for completion in a remarkable three years.
Upon completion, the dam will boast a mini hydro plant, provide water for both consumption and irrigation, and serve as a hub for a fisheries project. Its capacity to irrigate over 1 200 hectares of land on the adjacent irrigation scheme will transform the region into a thriving greenbelt.
Community members expressed their excitement about the project, particularly the prospect of enhanced agricultural productivity and improved livelihoods. “This is a tremendous project for Silobela,” remarked one community member.
“Our region is arid, and the dam’s water will enable us to cultivate gardens and boost our incomes,” said Patricia Mlambo.
Another resident echoed this sentiment, noting: “We are witnessing the realisation of Vision 2030 first hand. The promise of clean water generation is equally encouraging, as it will attract more people to the area.”
Honourable Jonah Nyevera, Member of Parliament for Silobela Constituency, expressed his delight at the project’s progress, stating: “This milestone marks a turning point for our constituency. We envision establishing a mini-town at Crossroads.”
The Second Republic’s commitment to inclusive development is exemplified by this project, as emphasised by Honourable Owen Ncube, Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution. “The Second Republic is resolute in its dedication to ensuring that development reaches every corner of our beloved country,” he asserted.
“Projects like Vungu, which had long been neglected, are now being revived.”
During a recent visit to Silobela Hospital, Honourable Ncube witnessed the installation of a new theatre machine, which is scheduled to be operational by the beginning of December.
