Government has set up a committee to investigate corruption in Vehicle Inspection Department.

This comes after there have been allegations that VID members are receiving bribes from people who want to acquire driver’s licences. The cost of acquiring a learner driver’s licence or Provisional driver’s licence is reportedly between US$80 and US$100.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Felix Mhona has urged Zimbabweans to make representations to the committee and provide necessary details to enable him to get to the bottom of the problem.

The Government is also considering amending the Traffic Safety Council Act to transform it into a Traffic Safety Agency and to increase reliance on technology to enforce road regulations.

There are also concerns that many holders of Class Two driver’s licence holders, who did not acquire Class Four licences first, did not go through proper driving tests and are one of the major causes of road accidents.
