Police have arrested a 20 year old woman over allegations of infanticide after she threw her infant daughter into a disused toilet in Charigwati Village, Seke.

“The suspect had escaped from Chitungwiza while her husband had gone to work and relocated to Mayambara Village, Seke. The offence came to light after the husband found the suspect without the child on 22/12/23,” the police said in a statement.

Police retrieved the remains of the child from the disused toilet.

A gender empowerment activist who heads an organisation that seeks to empower girls in school said that it is likely that the woman is suffering from post natal depression. She declined to be named saying that she has personally suffered from post natal depression and it has affected people close to her.

“These cases were mothers kill their children for no apparent reason are on the increase. It is likely post natal depression and the justice system should consider this when they try women for murder,” she said.

Recently police arrested a Lupane woman for killing her infant daughter because the baby’s cries had disturbed her sleep.

A public prosecutor who said they need clearance to speak to media said that where it appears that the suspect may not be in full control of their mental faculties, they are sent for psychiatric evaluation as a matter of course.

“The police usually indicate where they think a suspect might be having mental challenges. When the person appears in court, this is brought to the attention of the magistrate who always orders a psychiatric evaluation before continuation,” they said.
